Course Description

The coaching and developing of people, in order to encourage their highest performance and ongoing learning, is a crucial component in today's work world. The roles of a coach and a facilitator require new skills to enhance the capabilities of their employees and to bring the best possible environment to the workplace. The skills of communication, coaching, delegation, motivation and dealing with conflict will be developed, together with an understanding of adult learning.

Module #1 - Coaching and Communication Skills

  • components in the circular model of two-person communications
  • communication in the workplace
  • develop the tools for giving and getting feedback
  • role and appropriate use of personal disclosure
  • understand the nature of both assertiveness and verbal aggression

Module #2 - The Coaching Model: Tools and Techniques

  • understand the role of the a coach (both in sports and in the workplace)
  • consider the skills required to coach others
  • understand the 4-phase coaching models and the key skills

Module #3 - Leadership - Two Views

  • understand the four-part model of Situational Leadership
  • explore how to apply the techniques of Situational Leadership
  • Kouzes and Posner approach to leadership

Module #4 - Empowerment

  • understand the relationship between 'skills' and 'challenge'
  • understand the model known as 'ego states' - Parent, Adult and Child
  • relationship between empowerment and accountability

Module #5 - Delegation

  • understand the principles of effective delegation
  • explore options to improve the delegation process in your workplace

Module #6 - Motivation

  • explore the factors that drive behaviours
  • understand the hierarchical model of Maslow's approcah to motivation

Module #7 - Performance Management

  • understand the positive and negative dynamics of performance reviews
  • understand the three phases of an effective performance review process
  • understand alignment of expectations
  • receive tips for conducting the performance review interview

Module #8 - Conflict Resolution

  • understand both the constructive and destructive nature of interpersonal conflict in the workplace
  • explore the five conflict positions and where each could be useful
  • understand the nature of anger and how to best manage the emotion
  • explore the key elements to a succesful negotiation

Module #9 - Learning in the Workplace

  • planning staff training
  • share examples of both training and learning initiatives in your workplace
  • explore the various aims/purposes of learning
  • identify the unique characteristics of learning in the workplace setting
  • explore various opportunities to facilitate learning
  • share examples of siutations/factors in your workplace that inhibit/promote learning
  • apply your knowledge to build strategies to develop your work team

Module #10 - Applications and Skill Building

  • examine the coaching skills you have been exposed to and determine which you need to further develop
  • plan your personnel schedule for developing the selected skills, including getting feedback
  • work with others to plan and practice some selected skills
